Silkscreening workshop (ages 10-14)

We have series of workshops starting up in the next few weeks so I'm going to post them here under separate headings for easy access:

First up:

Silkscreening workshop for kids (ages 10-14 recommended.)

January 12, 19, 26 and February 2nd (we may start this a week later since this post is going up late.) Time: 10am-12noon.

Fee: $20 per session. It is recommended that students attend all four weeks. The fee covers supplies although students willl need to bring in a t-shirt on week 2.

Course Description: This 4-week course is designed to introduce kids to silkscreen printing and foster in them an interest in this exciting, accessible, and versatile print medium which has a long history in poster, t-shirt and DIY graphic design. Through building small screens in the first week which the kids can take home, to emulsing and exposing their own designs for printing on both paper and fabric, participants will gain valuable skills and abilities, while also creating works that they can keep.

Instructors: Morgan Charles & Karla Smith. Morgan and Karla both learned silkscreen printing while studying graphic design at Concordia. In 2004, they (along with another friend) started a small silkscreening company called Atelier Baraque, which specialized in designing and printing original bedlinens in various basement "studios." Morgan now works as a graphic designer and is pursuing her graduate degree in communications, while Karla works as a textile designer and product manager for a large housewares company. They both enjoy the hands-on quality of silkscreening as a remedy to the hours spent in front of the computer. Coincidentally, both of them have also spent summers as Arts & Crafts camp counselors. They hope this goes better.
