Back in 2010, the world of comics experienced a tremendous
loss when the great pioneer of autobiographical comics Harvey Pekar
passed away. Fans of the legendary curmudgeon will be pleased to hear that the folks at Zip Comics and Top Shelf have just released
never before seen material from the creator of the influential AMERICAN
SPLENDOR series. The work, titled CLEVELAND, follows Pekar as he goes about his
daily life and revisits the history of his Midwestern hometown. The story is illustrated
by Joseph Remnant, who excels at capturing the grit and beauty of both the city
of Cleveland and Pekar’s cast of characters. I cannot think of a better testament
to the legend of Harvey Pekar than a final work about his American roots.
Although I suppose that a hologram à la Tupac Shakur could have been pretty cool
too...
