The Casual Vacancy

J.K. Rowling's first novel intended for adult readers, The Casual Vacancy, has been MUCH ANTICIPATED. And it is finally out. In store!

Set in the fictional English town of Pagford, The Casual Vacancy unfolds as the town tries to fill a parish council seat left by the suddenly deceased good guy, Barry Fairbrother. Addressing small town ideology, bureaucracy, and issues of class, Rowling's new novel seems pretty far removed from Harry Potter and Hogwarts. But don't let that deter you. Rowling displays her clear strengths as a writer in this book, one of them being her ability to write children and teenaged characters as many reviews mention this aspect as being a highlight of the book.

And if you are on a Rowling kick, check out Ian Parker's thorough profile of the author in most recent New Yorker.
