On Thursday, May 29th, Librairie Drawn & Quarterly was overjoyed to host Dean Garlick in his launch of Chloes, with introductions by Mike Spry, projections of Nicole Legault's illustrations, and music by Athena Holmes and Kent Kataoka!
Dean is a massively active member of the writing community in the Mile End, and we always see him buying the books his peers have written, so it was so heartwarming to see everyone supporting Dean and buying his gorgeous little book. No one phrased it better than Mike Spry (of Bourbon & Eventide, another successful D&Q launch): "We're here tonight to celebrate Chloes, celebrate the book, but also celebrate Dean Garlick, who is at every literary event in the city."
Speaking of Mike Spry, the man gave Dean a glowing and somewhat improvised introduction, since Melissa Bull was indisposed. "I’m not Melissa Bull. I can’t believe how many times I've had to say that in my life." He praised Dean's involvement in the community, and called Chloes an interesting and accomplished novella.
Dean gave his thanks to everyone involved with the book, including the designer, Ryan Thompson, Melissa Bull, Jon Paul Fiorentino, and illustrator Nicole Legault. "It’s taken a community to make this book."
- Dean projected Nicole's illustrations while he read, which gave the presentation an immersive feeling of performance. He also talked about how he and Nicole had collaborated. She was raised on the East Coast and went to NSCAD; they met at Expozine one year and decided to collaborate, but it wasn't for years that they got to collaborate on Chloes. Worth the wait!
After the reading, Athena Holmes and Kent Kataoka treated the audience to a beautiful set of acoustic music, and everyone drank and was merry.
We'll send off with Dean signing; thanks to everyone for coming out, Mike for the wonderful intro, Athena Holmes and Kent Kataoka, Dean Garlick, and all the fabulous folks who came out!
