Out Now: Moomin on the Riviera!

It's a solid time to be a Moomin/Tove Jansson fan, you guys. Hot on the tails of Moomin Deluxe Edition comes another in the must-have series of colour Moomins, this time with one from Volume 1. Ladies and gentlemen, it's the full colour edition of Moomin and the Riviera!

The colour editions of Moomin strips were introduced to Drawn & Quarterly in 2012, with Moominvalley Turns Jungle. They are fantastic reissues in affordable, kid-friendly flexicovers, and in full color for the first time. They're slim and portable, and the perfect way to introduce little ones to the world of Moomin!

In Moomin on the Riviera, the Moomin family along with Snorkmaiden sail to the Riviera when winter comes to Moominvalley (Moomin and Moominmamma are, of course, not on board with the trip, but decide to go to give SM and Moominpappa their wish). Snorkmaiden is dazzled by the attentions of the playboy Clark Tresco and Moominpappa befriends an aristocrat Marquis Mongaga. As usual, homebodies Moomin and Moominmamma are completely at odds with the extravagance, and try to escape it at every turn.

Here is poor little Moomin, trying to have some fun climbing a tree (one of the only free-of-charge activities he and Mamma can find to do) and being met with a nest full of snakes. As a homebody, Moomin and Mamma's struggles are All Too Real to me, readers.

At this point I feel I should admit my bias here like a good reporter: in addition to this being one of my absolute favourite Moomin strips, I also helped in the production of this Moomin while interning at the Drawn and Quarterly office, so I have a special place for it in my heart. As should you! Not because you helped colour it, mind you, but because it's simply the most delightful story.

Fun fact: Moomin on the Riviera is the latest Moomin tale being turned into a film. You may already be familiar with the quaint stop-motion short Moomins and the Comet (featuring a song by Bjork!) Well Moomin on the Riviera is a full-length Finnish-French film, and it is now out in select cities. More info and the trailer available here.
