New fiction: Hanya Yanagihara's A Little Life

Hanya Yanagihara, author of 2013's The People in the Trees, is receiving high praise for her new epic novel, A Little Life.

This new work chronicles the lives of four friends over three decades, as they move to New York from their small Massachusetts college and slowly make lives for themselves in the city. Yanagihara fashions a dark and fatalistic study of male friendship and betrayal, and of human endurance in the face of traumatic history.

A Little Life is an extraordinary novel, an exploration of how love can restore and renew but never repair. In haunting language that both reflects the beauty of devotion and disguises the horror of total betrayal, Yanagihara has written an American tragedy for our time, a haunting plea for redemption.—Jason Beerman, the Toronto Star

The phrase “tour de force” could have been invented for this audacious novel.Kirkus Reviews
