Tonight: Shary Boyle and Emily Vey Duke launch The Illuminations Project!

Ooh, it's been awhile since we've had the honour of having Shary at the shop so this just the best news for us...and the fact that Emily Vey Duke is joining her is even better!  Please join us tonight at 7:00 p.m when Shary Boyle and Emily Vey Duke launch their new collaboration The Illuminations Project!

The Illuminations Project is a decade-long collaboration between two artists, feminists and friends. Shary Boyle and Emily Vey Duke’s visionary call-and-response forges connections between subversion and joy, drawing and writing. It is an exquisitely rendered road map through the chaos of growing up female, fearless and hungry for meaning.

This event will include readings and projections by the artists, wine and a welcoming atmosphere!

Emily Vey Duke and Shary Boyle get to walk shoulder-to-shoulder down the darkened alley, intimidating, imposing until we get up close and realize that these brutes together are on our side. In Vey Duke's texts there is poetry and prose to keep me company, guide my thoughts, explain emotions. Usually I think of Boyle's work as having sinister overtones, and alongside Vey Duke's writings Boyle takes on an additional aspect to her persona, that of imp or freewheeling dastardly celebrator. Boyle is one of the only living workers today who does not work within what I previously understood to be likely, or even possible. I get off on the violence she realizes. I get off on the beauty too, and the way she calls me back to images, ideas, materials, attitudes that I had stupidly walked by and given up for dead. There aren’t a lot of things that make sense to me. Shary Boyle’s art does.
 - Will Oldham, "Bonnie Prince Billy"
