The High Mountains of Portugal is the most recent work from bestselling author and winner of the Man Booker Prize, Yann Martel. He will be in Montreal at the Victoria Hall tomorrow - Wednesday, February 3rd - in conversation with Joseph Rosen!
Much like his best-known work, Life of Pi, Martel's latest novel uses surrealism and absurdity to explore human responses to loss, as well as the complex relationships between humans and other animals. This latest novel consists of three intertwined surrealist stories featuring a grieving man who walks backwards, a pathologist devoted to Agatha Christie, and the unlikely connection between a bereft politician and a chimpanzee.
Ursula K. Le Guin, writing for the Guardian, recommends Martel as "an original, strange and subtle thinker" on the subject of the relation between human and animal. A review in Quill & Quire remarks that The High Mountains of Portugal "poses intriguing questions about loss, faith, suffering, and love." The Washington Post has high praise especially for the last story of the three, in which "Martel’s writing has never been more charming, a rich mixture of sweetness that’s not cloying and tragedy that’s not melodramatic."
