Staff Pick - Rebecca : A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

A Little Life - Hanya Yanahgihara

Fragility is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of this book and heartbreaking is the second.  And I almost didn't pick it up.

The cover photo of the Orgasmic Man by Peter Hujar was surprisingly a bit of a turn off, and then the descriptions that I quickly skimmed of four men's friendship and brotherly bonds didn't peak my interests.  But people with great taste keep buying it and so when one arrived damaged I picked it up for an evening read and I am so grateful.

Hanya Yanagihara makes the reader feel so much that it is taking me days to process everything I felt.  I was lost in the story for days, and I had tears in my eyes for all of those days.  It's a book that will always make me sad, but Yanagihara gives just enough hope to keep you going.  The cruelty that exists in this book is tempered by the strength of friendship and the love that can be built.  And even though I was relieved to finish the book, not because I wanted to stop reading, but because I wanted the characters to be able to rest - I wanted to rest, I am still so happy to have experienced it.
